General Introduction to Haloalkanes
Class: 12

The compounds which are formed by the replacing one hydrogen atom from alkane by halogen atom are called haloalkanes. They are also called alkyl halides.

These are represented by general formula RX where R is the alkyl group and X is the halogen group.

General Formula:

General Formula of Haloalkanes

On the basis of type of the hydrogen halogen attached carbon atom alkyl halides are classified into three types:
  1. Primary (1o)[1^o]alkyl halides
  2. Secondary (2o) alkyl halides
  3. Tertiary (3o) alkyl halides
1. Primary (1o) alkyl halides
Alkyl halides in which halogen atom is attached with primary carbon atom are called primary (1o) [alkyl halides.

General Formula:

General Formula of Primary Alkyl Halides

2. Secondary (2o) alkyl halides
Alkyl halides in which halogen atom is attach with secondary carbon atom are called secondary (2o) alkyl halides.
General Formula of Secondary Alkyl Halides

3) Tertiary (3o) Alkyl Halides
Alkyl halides in which halogen atom is attached with tertiary (3o) carbon atom are called tertiary alkyl halides.
