It is a main chemical component of protoplasm and usually occupies 75-85 % of protoplasm. Most of metabolic activities that maintain life take place only ion presence of water. Water requirement to body can be fulfilled in three ways, from food, oxidation of food and then by drinking water. 

Function: 
The functions of water to living beings are as follows: 
  1. It is main chemical component of a cell. 
  2. The body fluids like blood, enzyme or hormone are composed of water. 
  3. It is a medium through which nervous metabolic activities are performed. 
  4. It maintains body temperature as it has high specific heat capacity. 
  5. It is a solvent which helps to dissolving nervous components that are available in the body. 
Requirement 
If sufficient water is not drunk, the body begins to draw water from the cells and makes cells shrieked, this condition is called dehydration. The water requirements to body varies with seasons and physiological state of body. A normal adult person needs about 3-5 liter water daily.
