Class: 12

Vitamins are divided into two groups depending on solubility. They are water soluble vitamins and fat soluble vitamin. Vitamin A, D, E and L are fat soluble vitamin and vitamin B-Complex and C are water soluble vitamins. 

Vitamin B-Complex 
It is water soluble vitamin and composed of numbers of vitamins. The name, sources function and deficiency can be mentioned as follows. 

Vitamin B1 (Thaiminal) 
  • Source: Grains, germinating seeds, meat, orange 
  • Function: Helps in removing carbondioxide from body. 
  • Deficiency: Beriberi, which is characterized by nervous disorders Emaliation, oedema. 
Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) 
  • Source: Dairy products, meats, eggs, vegetables, onion, spinach 
  • Function: Helps in metabolism of carbohydrate and protein 
  • Deficiency: Causes glossitis which in inflammable of tongue causes chelosis which is characterized by cracking at corners of mouth. 
Vitamin B3 
  • Sources: Nuts, meats and grains 
  • Functions: Helps in metabolism of amino acidy and carbohydrates 
  • Deficiency: Causes pellagra which is characterized by inflammation of tongue, pigmented skin, nervous disorder and early ageing. 
Vitamin B4 
  • Sources: Egg yolk, meat, dairy products, nuts 
  • Function: Promotes fat metabolism in liver 
  • Deficiency: Cirrhosis (damage of liver cells), Impair cell coordination 
Vitamin B6 
  • Sources: meat, fruits, vegetables and nuts 
  • Function: Helps in metabolism of amino acid and fatty acid. 
  • Deficiency: Muscular twitch, anemia 
Vitamin B9 
  • Sources: Green vegetables, orange, nuts, legumes, chicken 
  • Function: Helps in protein synthesis 
  • Deficiency: Canaemia during pregnancy, birth defeats 
Vitamin B12 
  • Sources: Meat, egg, dairy Products 
  • Function: Helps in maintaining of RBC 
  • Deficiency: Anemia, nervous system disorder 
Vitamin C 
It is first known vitamin and also called as anti-scurvy vitamin. It plays an important role in the development of blood cells. It occurs in citrus fruits, tomato, cabbage and green pepper. Its deficiency causes scurvy which is characterized with bleeding gums, loosening and falling out of teeth, fall smelling from mouth and poor wound healing.
