Evolution and Characteristics of Tourism

Evolution of Tourism

The gradual change and development of an idea situation or object is referred to as evolution. Hence, evolution of tourism refers to the gradual development of the tourism activities from the past to present and perhaps, it will continue in the future too. Since the beginning of human civilization in this world, traveling has been as ongoing event. So, one can sum up that traveling is a human nature but tourism is a process and activities of new phenomenon.

The evolution of tourism can be divided into three phases:

i) The Fist Phase:

In the first phase, the evolution of tourism is referred to as the tourism before railways. During this time, tourism was primarily undertaken for the purpose of trade and pilgrimage. The nature of tourism was spiritually oriented and life was not divided between work and leisure throughout this phase.

ii) The Second Phase:

The second phase of tourism marks the beginning of industrial revolution. The introduction and development of railway had revolutionized the entire scenario of traveling.

iii) The Third Phase:

The end of two great world wars marks the onset of the third phase. The essential components of tourism almost reached on optimal point and the general mass also realized and perceived the educative dimension.

Characteristics of Tourism

1. Tourism activities should take place away form the familiar home environment.
2. Tourism arises from the movement of people to the unfamiliar destinations.
